The power of thought

Dr. Sanjeev Rastogi, MD

Have you ever been in love? If yes, then only you will be able to feel the power of it. It is enormous; the power of love .Our world is full of events, which turned out to be a major turn around in the history. Love has acted as the sole motivational force behind most of them.

Like all other emotions, love is the abstract expression of the pure energy. As we know, every feeling generated in the mind is the net out come of a complex interaction between individual and universe, the same is for love too. How this happens that while meeting with so many people every day, we just choose only few of them to be enlisted as our friends and among them too, only a finger count reaches at our inner core to achieve a real closeness. Likings and disliking are the spontaneous reactions of our mind to the prevailing positive and negative energies. Love at first sight, though some times taken as a Bollywood stunt, albeit is a biological reality which happens if you let your heart not being governed by your brain for a while .As the interpersonal interaction at first sight is usually abstract and is performed by a free flow of vibration energy in between, this happens to be the purest of your perceptions which otherwise is not in the reach of five physical senses. Unfortunately, in the world of now, soon this phase is taken over by the brain who works no less than a computer by analyzing the available data and making the interpretations with due logics.

In physics, there is a phenomenon of interference between two waves meeting together. If they are in harmony, there will be a kind of synergism with ultimate increase in their potentials, however if this is contrary, they will create impedance to each other finally to cause the mutual destruction. This is how vibration works between us too. Out of many colleagues you have, there may be only a few with whom you may be feeling eletic, energetic and more cheerful. This is not true to you only but to your friend also whose company you enjoy most. This is the phenomenon of energy synergism helping mutually. Contrary to this, there are millions of examples of the reverse of this phenomenon in our day-to-day life. There are people whose mere presence can make you restless, depressed, anxious, sad or irritable and to the most of surprise this all can happen without the exchange of a single word in between. How this happens? This is the example of energy impedance .If there is no harmony in between; this negative energy outflow will act as a boomerang to hit you back. Again this is a mutual phenomenon, affecting both the ends equally.

Interestingly, Indian sages have found a most unique way to counteract this impedance by counteracting the negative energy of others. An often-said story of Buddha says about a person who was a strong opponent of his preaching. This was a routine to him to come at Buddha every day and scold him to his stomachful. Every time Buddha replied back with a smile to his scolding .Out of surprise one day the man couldn?t resist him self-asking with Buddha that how he doesn?t scolds back to him in reply. Buddha smiled to his known elegance and said, what do you do, if you receive some guests at your home? I serve them with the best of the things I have, best food and gifts, the man replied. And what happens to the things offered by you, if your friends don?t take them? Buddha asked again. Then what, simple, it remains with me, replied the man confidently. Sorry friend, I don?t accept the words you offered to me .Now they remains with you only, and this is why I don?t have any need to scold you back, Buddha smiled.

This is how a negative feeling can be transformed to create a growth oriented positive environ. Though this is the sages way, but can be implemented in our life up to some extent provided if we can become little more thoughtful before jumping to the conclusions or reactions .If you feel good for some one, or at least don?t have a negative feeling, sooner or later he is also going to feel the same for you. The same is true for the negative feelings too. If we start thinking negatively about some thing, or get malice about a person, soon we will start finding the evidences that all what we plotted for, is actually happening .The preaching for love are not only for the sake of morality but to save and sustain the entire human being. This is why since time immemorial, this is said that if you grant love to others you will get it back in some way or other. The same will be if you get malicious, you will be finding people standing against your way. In simpler ways, this is said in the proverb ? as you sow so you reap. This is not an extension of just the morale teachings but a biological reality too.

Our thinking is the most important instrument, which can make the instant changes in our physiology. A properly channelised and oriented thought process can take you to the heights you dream for and simultaneously, a positive outlook towards the world will make the things easy to flow without any impedance. This will help in making of a growth oriented environ where every one can live peacefully and in harmony.

Terramed Alliance News Nearly half of all breast cancer patients experienced chronic pain two to three years after treatment and more than half felt discomfort, according to a study by Danish researchers published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the New York Times reports. The study found that women younger than age 40, those who underwent radiation treatment and those who had surgery to remove lymph nodes in the armpit are most likely to experience lingering pain.

In an accompanying editorial, Loretta Loftus, a senior member of the breast cancer program at the Lee Moffitt Cancer Center, wrote, “This should alert clinicians who are caring for these patients to pay more attention to those who are in the high risk groups for pain” (Caryn Rabin, New York Times, 11/10).

Researchers examined a 2009 survey of 3,253 Danish women who had breast cancer surgery in 2005 and 2006, Reuters reports. Forty-seven percent of the patients reported pain. Within that group, 13% described the pain as severe, 39% described it as moderate and 48% said it was light. Twenty percent of the women surveyed said they had contacted a physician within the last three months regarding their pain (Brown, Reuters, 11/10). Women of all ages who had mastectomies were more likely to have severe pain than light pain. Pain most frequently occurred in the breast that was operated upon, in the chest area where tissue was removed, in the upper arm where lymph nodes were removed or along one side of the body, according to U.S. News & World Report’s “On Women.”

“This study isn’t saying to change treatment recommendations based on whether or not a certain treatment is likely to be associated with pain,” Loftus said, adding, “But it’s telling oncologists that they need to be more alert to the incidence of pain,” she said (Kotz, “On Women,” U.S. News & World Report, 11/10). The study’s author, Henrik Kehlet of the University of Copenhagen, said more research is needed to determine why some women experience lingering pain and others do not (Szabo, USA Today, 11/11).

Trent Consultants News: Lowers blood pressure, encourages exercise, improves psychological health? these may sound like the effects of a miracle drug, but they are actually among the benefits of owning a four-legged, furry pet.

This fall, the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine Research Center for Human-Animal Interaction (ReCHAI) will explore the many ways animals benefit people of all ages during the International Society for Anthrozoology and Human-Animal Interaction Conference in Kansas City, Mo., on Oct. 20-25.

?Research in this field is providing new evidence on the positive impact pets have in our lives,? said Rebecca Johnson, associate professor in the MU Sinclair School of Nursing, the College of Veterinary Medicine and director of ReCHAI. ?This conference will provide a unique opportunity to connect international experts working in human-animal interaction research with those already working in the health and veterinary medicine fields. A wonderful array of presentations will show how beneficial animals can be in the lives of children, families and older adults.?

CommunicatingTough News in Tough Times – Employee Communications

When you have difficult news to communicate, do it like removing a bandage: swiftly and completely.

How you and your business cope in tough times is a reflection of true character. How you communicate during those tough times reflects your values. It may be instinctive to duck and run for cover when things look bad, but just like your mother told you, it’s best to stand up and face the music.

If you have bad news to tell your staff, make sure it’s not ‘out of left field.’ Regular employee briefings are essential, making them aware of the state of business, how things are going in the industry, what the competition is up to and what the company is planning are all important pieces of information so everyone is pulling in the same direction. They won’t feel blindsided if you’ve keep them apprised all along.

Plan the dissemination of bad news meticulously. Carefully plot out each step, craft each message and go over the timing and the ways in which you will communicate as if you’re organizing D-Day all over again.

Make sure your management team has full information first so they can follow up with potentially shell-shocked employees. When it’s really stunning news – like a closure or layoffs or severe financial losses – people tend to stop listening after the first shock. They need to be able to go back over the details of the news with their immediate supervisors.

In preparing to make tough news announcements, craft key messages and “potential questions-suggested-answers.” These will be the same points you use in speeches, meetings, media interviews and news releases. Do a brainstorming session with your senior management to uncover worst-case scenarios and role-play how you will handle things as they unfold. Don’t avoid any issue. Now is not the time to pretend no one knows where the bodies are buried.

Tell everything you know and tell it fast. Today news really does travel faster than light – thanks to the Internet and mobile phones – so don’t dally. Gossip and innuendo quickly fill any information vacuum you leave.

Tell as many people as possible in person. That gives them a chance to ask the questions that matter to them and gives you a chance to give human expression to the news. Whether it’s sympathy, encouragement, empathy or comfort, they will take away an impression of leadership when you’ve spoken to them face-to-face and added the human dimension. To paraphrase Maya Angelou: long after people have forgotten what you said, they remember how you made them feel.

Impart the tough news with the gravitas it is due. Don’t try to minimize it, don’t dismiss fears or speculation and for heaven’s sake, don’t try to make jokes. Think of it as imparting the news of a death. When someone’s job is at stake, it can be a life-or-death experience for that person.

Make sure everyone in the organization has someone at whom to vent. I will never forget the face of the CEO who stood up before 50 employees in a branch plant he was closing. He told them why and when it would happen and then he answered their questions. He stood at the door and shook each employee’s hand as they left. It was a draining, difficult experience, but they respected him for it and they conveyed that respect in the stories they told to their families and in the community.

If you are eliminating positions and re-organizing staff, do as much as you can to support employees in transition to other employment. Make sure the rest of the staff know what is available and all that you are doing.

Make sure everything about the tough news you’ve announced is also available in written form. People need something to refer to when they’ve left the workplace and likely will not remember all you said in your speech. Put everything you can on your website or the employee-only Intranet. Understand it becomes public the minute you do, so be careful with your words.

Make sure your employees, shareholders and other close stakeholders know before the media. Nothing is so disenfranchising and disheartening as finding out you lost your job because of the headline on the front page of this morning’s newspaper. It is a betrayal of your employees’ trust and makes your organization look inept at best and unscrupulous at worst.

Tell everyone the same story. Don’t embellish or minimize or put a ’spin’ or different emphasis on it in anyway for anyone. Stick to the facts and you won’t have to remember anything else. As Mark Twain said, “If you tell the truth, you don’t have to remember anything.”

Trent Consultants News: Adults who use pet therapy while recovering from total joint-replacement surgery require 50 percent less pain medication than those who do not. These findings were presented at the 18th Annual Conference of the International Society of Anthrozoology and the First Human Animal Interaction Conference (HAI) in Kansas City, Mo.

“Evidence suggests that animal-assisted therapy (AAT) can have a positive effect on a patient’s psychosocial, emotional and physical well being,” said Julia Havey, RN, study presenter and senior systems analyst, Department of Medical Center Information Systems, Loyola University Health System (LUHS). “These data further support these benefits and build the case for expanding the use of pet therapy in recovery.”

Trent Consultants News: Animal lover Havey, and colleague Frances Vlasses, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, began raising puppies to become assistance dogs more than a decade ago through a program called Canine Companions for Independence (CCI). The non-profit organization provides highly trained assistance dogs to people with physical and developmental disabilities free of charge.

“As nurses, we are committed to improving the quality of life for others,” said Vlasses, associate professor & chair of Health Systems Management and Policy, Loyola University Chicago Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing. “This service experience has provided us with a unique way to combine our love for animals with care for people with special needs.

In addition to the financial obligations that go along with raising a puppy, Havey and Vlasses take the dogs to class and teach them house and public etiquette until they are old enough to enter a formal training program.

“You might see our four-legged friends around Loyola’s campus from time to time,” said Havey, RN, senior systems analyst, Department of Medical Center Information Systems, LUHS. “Part of our responsibility as volunteers is to acclimate these dogs to people. The Loyola community has so graciously supported this training and the use of service dogs on campus.”

When the dogs are approximately 15 months of age, Havey and Vlasses return them to CCI’s regional training center for six to nine months where they are trained to be one of four types of assistance dogs.

Service dogs are trained to assist with physical tasks and provide social support to their partners. These dogs learn 40 commands to enhance the independence of people with ailments ranging from spinal cord injuries to multiple sclerosis.

Facility dogs are trained to work with a professional in a visitation, education or health-care setting. They can perform more than 40 commands designed to motivate, rehabilitate or soothe clients with special needs.

Skilled companion dogs are trained to work with an adult or child with a disability under the guidance of a facilitator. Disabilities served include cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, autism and Down’s syndrome. A skilled companion also can serve as a social bridge to people who are not used to relating to a person with disabilities.

Hearing dogs are trained to recognize and alert partners to various sounds, such as a doorbell, alarm clock or smoke alarm. The average service life of each dog is eight years. After that time, the dog retires to live out its golden years as a pet.

Havey and Vlasses believe that animal-assisted therapy will ultimately become a standard of care for healing. The pair will continue to advocate for this therapeutic option through public speaking engagements and philanthropic work. Adapted from materials provided by Loyola University Health System.

Los Angeles, CA April 27, 2009 – It?s good news, according to insurance agents: Legislation designed to remove Medicare?s annual benefit cap on outpatient rehabilitation services, including physical and speech therapy, could be acted on by Congress later this year.

“This is great for seniors on Medicare,” said Alan Weinstock, an insurance agent at www.MedicareSupplementPlans.com, who indicates that, if passed, the legislation could benefit seniors financially and improve their access to certain types of health care.

The Medicare Access to Rehabilitation Services (MARS) Act is designed to ease health care costs and improve health care access for seniors confronting age-related diseases, such as heart disease, strokes, or Parkinson?s. Currently seniors receiving outpatient rehabilitation services have an annual dollar limit of $1,840.00 for care. Once the dollar amount is reached, the care stops for the remaining calendar year, although that dollar amount resets every year on January 1.

Business Tip: Become a Necessity, Not a Luxury

From John Spencer Ellis, CEO

Everyone is talking about the economy. Is everyone really ?hurting?? Sure, gas prices are up and anyone who has a significant amount of money invested in real estate or who has a job in the real estate sector is affected to some degree. However, do you really think that the people who want training are really suddenly unable to afford your services? Those who have money and will be buying your services are still doing fine. Oh, some people will make the excuse that the economy, gas prices, or real estate market has hurt them, but what they are really saying is, ?There are more important things for me to do with my money than spending it on you.? Don?t argue with them, they must do what they feel they must do. Your primary job is to give your clients so much value that you are the LAST thing they would ever dream of dropping.

New people should be scrambling to obtain the finances to be able to afford you. Do people stop buying cars because they can?t ?afford? them? Do you think everyone ONLY buys a car they can ?afford?? Most people cannot afford to own a car, which is why they have a loan and regular loan payments. But they still buy the car. Despite the possibility of carpooling or public transportation, people simply value their cars too much to let them go. You must ensure your value is appreciated in the same way. You must become a necessity, not a luxury. Life and health are more important than transportation (keep that mindset, don?t say that to your clients or they?ll laugh at you). No more excuses as to why you aren?t successful. Learn what you must about training so that you can provide a clear, well-defined, and outstanding program with tremendous energy in instruction, and keep learning from those who are successful is sales and promotion of their services. Most people are not suddenly unable to afford your services; it is another test for you to show them how much you are truly worth. People will always fight to keep what they value highly. Keep your head up and raise your game?NO EXCUSES! Become a necessity.

For more information on how to communicate with your clients, gain new clients, and retain all of your clients for the long term, refer to your NESTA PFT manual. Don?t have an updated manual? It?s time to upgrade at www.nestapft.com or by calling 1-877-348-6692. Learn from your clients as they learn from you.

Training Tip: Assess Active Range of Motion before Loading

From Mark Baines, Senior Vice President of Program Development

If you have ever found yourself struggling to determine why your client has such a hard time with a given exercise, it could simply be that they do not understand the movement. But remember, most clients cannot learn the movement by starting with external loading. They must first complete the movement without any load at all. We simply call this ? Active Range of Motion (AROM).

It is imperative that you have your client mirror your movement and duplicate what you do so that they understand the movement you are asking them to perform. This may mean standing right in front of them and having them perform simulated pulldown movements (shoulder adduction with elbow flexion) until you are satisfied they can complete the basic movement. Have them continue to mirror you and perform the ?air movement? until it is satisfactory. Then, once they attempt an externally loaded pulldown movement, they are not likely to make as many or any mistakes.

It is your job to show your client, and teach your client the movement, then observe their active range of motion so that they not only understand the movement and what is expected, but so that you know how far and how well they can move. Once the client is ?loaded? you must not exceed this active range of motion. Your client will move better, progress faster, understand your expectations more clearly, and you will have a happier, healthier client that will make your overall training job much easier.

It is so simple. But so many trainers avoid it, ignore it, or forget it. Perform this simple action every time you are attempting either a complex movement or a new movement with your client. It only takes a moment, and it will separate you as a professional trainer over those who simply put their clients on a machine or exercise and try to describe what to do with little success.

For more information about assessing active range of motion and determining the most appropriate exercise to fit your clients? goals, consult your NESTA PFT manual. Don?t have an updated manual? Call 1-877-348-6692 or got to www.NESTApft.com and order yours today. Take care of your clients.

The NESTA live workshop schedule in the coming months can be found below. If you do not see a workshop scheduled in your area any time soon, please contact us. NESTA currently provides live learning opportunities in AZ, CA, FL, IL, IN, NY, TX, AND WA (CO and OR coming soon). In most cases, in order to hold a NESTA workshop there must be at least 30 attendees or the workshop may be postponed to a later date or alternate location. We realize that live hands-on training is perhaps the most useful form of training for any professional. Please be sure to sign up early as workshops often sell out. Let us know how we can be of greater service to you.

Nothing beats a combination of live training with solid distance education. Sign up now at http://www.nestacertified.com/workshop-schedule.html.
