As part of the national Caregiver Education Series, the Powerful Tools for Caregivers course is designed for individuals caring for older adults who are living at home or in a facility, or who are managing caregiver services from a distance. The four-week class will be held at Jordan Hospital in Plymouth from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on September 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th.
The educational legislative briefing was presented by the Executive Office of Elder Affairs in collaboration with the Attorney General?s Office, Massachusetts Home Care and the AARP Foundation of Massachusetts in their continuing efforts to prevent the abuse and exploitation of elders.
In a speech geared toward legislators, Executive Office of Elder Affairs Secretary Mike Festa advocated for improved coordination across bodies of legislation and state government and expressed an interest in getting the Massachusetts Bar Association involved. Attorney General Martha Coakley also spoke, informing all that she had added ?Victim Witness Advocates? for elders in her regional offices and expressed her strong conviction for pursuing financial ?predators? of the elderly.
?Both Secretary Festa and Attorney General Coakley are extremely dynamic speakers and I found the talks to be very informative and helpful. It was a positive step towards letting folks know what is being done with regard to protecting elders from abuse and exploitation. While there?s no single way to attack the problem, providing education, prevention and outreach are steps in the right direction,? said DiGiorgi.

The Expo is designed to broaden the community’s awareness about resources available to help manage elder care issues. Throughout the day, attendees can visit information booths that promote good health and well-being and receive free health screenings.
At 11 a.m., Allen C. Waltman, M.D., Director, Geriatrics, Signature Healthcare PrimaryCare Affiliates will present the workshop “Primary Care in the Elderly”. Dr. Waltman is Board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and has additional distinctive qualifications in Geriatric Medicine.
Every attendee will receive a free copy of the latest EECO Resource Guide for Older Adults and Caregivers.

The “Caring Homes” Program, is a community option for seniors age 60 years and older. Applicants for this program must meet state home care guidelines. The program provides supportive services in a private home to elders with complex medical and/or cognitive needs. Elders receive room, board, 24-hour supervision, assistance with daily activities and personal care. The caregiver may be a family member but not a spouse or a legal guardian. The elder pays the caregiver room and board. The caregiver also receives a monthly stipend (approx. $50 per day) for providing personal care services. The Caring Homes Program is funded by the Executive Office of Elder Affairs (EOEA) and is a non-Mass Health program.
The “Enhanced Adult Family Care” program is specifically for elderly or disabled adults who are on MassHealth. Individuals who have complex medical and/or cognitive needs may receive supportive services in a home-like setting from a caregiver. Again, the caregiver may be a family member, but not a spouse or legal guardian. The individual pays the caregiver room and board and the caregiver receives a monthly stipend of $49.05 per day for providing personal care services. Enhanced Adult Family Care is funded by Mass Health.
The “Adult Family Care” program is for elders or disabled adults who do not require around-the-clock care and are on MassHealth. Elders who require assistance with one activity of daily living, such as bathing and dressing, may be eligible for this program. The elder pays the caregiver room and board and the caregiver receives a monthly stipend (approx. $20 per day) for providing personal care services. This option is not available to spouses or legal guardians. Adult Family Care is funded by Mass Health.
In order to qualify for the “Caring Homes” or “Enhanced Adult Family Care”, an elder must meet the clinical requirements. They must be in need of hands-on physical assistance with at least three activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing and eating or require assistance with just two activities of daily living in addition to the need for management of behaviors such as wandering.
According to Kristina Gardiner, Adult Family Care/Caring Homes Director at OCES, ”The Caring Homes and Adult Family Care Programs provide an incredible opportunity for caregivers who would like to provide care in the home setting. The caregiver not only receives a tax-free daily stipend, but the ongoing support of a Registered Nurse and Licensed Social Worker.”

The Elder Care Expo is designed to broaden the community’s awareness about resources available to help manage elder care issues. There will be resource exhibits, health screenings and educational seminars throughout the day.
The health screenings offered include: hearing, glucose and pulmonary function screenings as well as blood pressure checks.
Rochelle Sugarman, Family Caregiver Support Program Caregiver Specialist at OCES will present a seminar on “Tools for Caring”. Seniors and caregivers will learn about tips and resources that are available to family caregivers and the elders in their care.
Pam McCormack, Manager of the Alzheimer’s Association Southeastern MA, Cape Cod and the Islands office, will hold the seminar “Maintain Your Brain: How to Live a Brain-Healthy Lifestyle”. Attendees will learn about scientifically-rooted nutritional and lifestyle advice, interactive exercises and activities. This program is geared to adults who want to learn more about staying fit from the neck up.
There will also be refreshments, giveaways and raffles. Every attendee will receive the updated Elder Education and Community Outreach (EECO).Resource Guide for Older Adults and Caregivers.
