Home Business for the Elderly

When people retire from their jobs, they tend to think that they would have all the satisfaction in the world as they finally become free from their source of stress. However, when people retire, they would always have a tendency to find another job wherein they can be productive.

Engaging in a home business is for everyone. It is one of the fastest growing trend in the US. There’s no truth in saying there is an age limit for a person to enter into a home business. Being young does not necessarily equate to business acumen and competence and is not a key determinant of the success of a home business. In fact, elderly people have a huge advantage over younger ones in terms of business wisdom.

A home business is also seen as a preventive measure against rapid aging. We all know of someone who died a few years after he retired from his lifelong job. Again, it’s all about seeing one’s worth in the context of other things. Also, being engaged in a home business is a good exercise to be able to keep the mind and body working properly. Our bodies can be compared to cars in this sense. If an old car is garaged for a time, rust will accumulate and the parts of the car will deteriorate. A well-oiled machine, even if it is old, will always run beautifully.

Elders also engage in home businesses so as to try to leave another legacy to their family during the last quarter of their lives. If the business blooms, then, they would have a legacy to pass on to their children and to their families. If the business fails, then there would be no regrets because at least they tried to venture into something they thought was worthwhile. Failure will always leave the most valuable lessons.

What are some characteristics of a business that elders can venture into? There are no restrictions in engaging in home businesses per se, but not all kinds of home business ventures can be dealt into by elders. Here are some ideas:

-It should not be too physically imposing

With age come physical limitations. The home business should not put too much strain on the bodies of the elders. We would want the business to be some sort of exercise for them and not a punishment.
– It should be fun

Elders also have the need to express themselves and their long-suppressed talents and skills. They should engage in activities that they can really enjoy.

-It should give quality time for the elders and their families

A home business essence lies on the fact that one works at the comforts of one’s home and with his family. A home business for elders should always provide for quality time between the family.

Elders are much encouraged to venture in a home business. It will make their minds sharp and their bodies strong. It will also be a way for the family to be able to spend productive hours together.

-New Skills

Its never too late to learn! Learning new skills and technology can have a very positive impact on one’s life.

With the first of the baby boomer generation turning 60, the “silver tsunami” is upon us and working caregivers are being faced with the added responsibility of caring for aging parents or other loved ones. What was once referred to as the “sandwich generation”, is now becoming the “club sandwich generation.” Caregivers today, ages 35-55, are sandwiched between caring for their own families, and assuming the responsibility of caring for aging parents and, in many cases, grandparents or even aunts and uncles.

Balancing all the responsibility has truly become a juggling act. Attending a child’s final soccer game versus taking an elderly loved one to a medical appointment has become a stressful decision that tugs at the hearts of caregivers. Coupled with working full time, the reality of the days growing longer as the nights grow shorter becomes increasingly evident.

Although statistics show the burden of care giving still falls on the woman of the household, the number of men in this role is increasing steadily with a 60/40 ratio of female/male caregivers.

The role of assisting an elderly loved one is not a one-time event. It is ongoing and constantly changing as medical, social and financial needs evolve. This added responsibility compounds the stressors of daily life and in many cases a resulting negative change occurs in the complexion of the family. Often, family members are overwhelmed by guilt, confusion and fear, because they made a promise to take care of their parents and many feel the responsibility to provide elder care themselves.

In addition, today’s slumping real estate market further exacerbates the need for informal caregivers, as many elderly are forced to remain in their homes. Then suddenly, a health crisis arises and the family is faced with making arrangements without full knowledge of what elder care options are available. Searching for appropriate care and/or services is often a confusing and daunting task. Not knowing which options would be most appropriate for one’s individual situation makes it more complicated and frustrating. Furthermore, the “maze” of elder care options available on the internet can often lead to more confusion.

In light of the aging workforce, coupled with a decrease in the available workers needed to replace them, more and more forward thinking employers are offering elder care services to help their workers manage this growing issue. Elder care as a workplace issue is now at the stage where childcare was 20 to 30 years ago. If elder care follows the same trajectory that childcare issues took, employers could find themselves radically restructuring employment benefits policies to accommodate this social change. It is estimated that elder care issues cost the national economy $34 billion annually and this cost is expected to increase at a staggering pace. Realizing the impact that elder care giving responsibilities has on their employees, some forward thinking employers have made elder care services available to their employees as a benefit. Providing greater access and utilization of the right kind of information allows an employee to balance their commitments to career and family while maximizing productivity and enhancing the employee’s quality of life.

With elder care giving expected to reach major proportions in the next 10 to 15 years, more employers must start laying the groundwork to ensure that they are taking good care of their business by taking good care of their employees and providing workers with the resources to address elder care needs.

How Do You Start An Eldercare Business In Florida?

My friend told me she wants to devote the rest of her life to businesses catering to all aspects of eldercare and even to start an Assisted Living Facility. She has 20 years of experience in health care and management. I want to jump on the bandwagon as well, but I have no paid experience in health care (but I am volunteering for Hospice, American Red Cross, assisted living facilities, nursing homes, and Alzheimer’s Project been involved since my junior year of high school back in 2001) but I do have business experience (managerial and financial). I am also finishing my B.S. in Business Administration (concentration in finance) and completed a pre-medical curriculum. If accepted to medical school, I want my residency to be either geriatrics or pediatrics and to also take a fellowship in integrative medicine. Your help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
