How Long To Recover From Being A Caregiver?

I was a caregiver for 10 years until he died a few months ago. The last couple of years was really intense – help with bathing, dressing, etc. I still feel physically and emotionally exhaused. How long does it take to recover and what can I do to help the process?

I’m going through this right now with my mom. I feel physically and emotionally exhausted. Hospice is involved, but it is very taxing. Plus, my daughter is pregnant with quads. She lives some distance away and also needs my help and support. I can’t tell you how long it takes to recover, just wanted to let you know that there are others in your shoes. Have you tried some short term counseling or even some short term medication? I’m taking an anti-depressant and sometimes some sleeping meds. I’m glad I have it. I also lost my job unexpectedly and have my own chronic medical issues. Hang in there and just take one day at a time. I am not excessively spiritual, but do believe that things are in God’s hands. Best wishes.
